Bello, Mavericks Blast Highlands 7-1

The Mesa State Baseball team pounded out eleven hits and came away with a 7-1 victory over the N.M. Highlands Cowboys in front of 588 fans on Friday night at Suplizio Field. With the win, the Mavericks improve to 14-9 on the season and 12-5 in the RMAC. The Mavericks held on to the top spot in the Mountain Division and second place in the RMAC.

The Mavericks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a Greg Anderson (Tempe, Ariz.) two-run single up the middle and Anderson came around and scored on N.M. Highlands passed ball.

That would be all the Mavericks would need as Nolan Snell (Albuquerque, N.M.) limited the Cowboys to one run on three hits, walked three and struck out eight in seven innings of work. With the eight strikeouts, Snell grabbed the RMAC lead in strikeouts (50).

Mesa State tacked on in fourth inning with a three-run blast from Brian Bello (Ft. Collins, Colo.) The homerun was Bello's second of the season and gave the Mavericks a 6-1 lead.

They would add an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI single from Jeff Popick (Lakewood, Colo.) that gave the Mavericks the decisive 7-1 advantage.

Colton Little (Westminster, Colo.) finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

The series between the two teams will continue tomorrow at 2:00pm from Suplizio Field.
