Mavs Sweep Doubleheader

The Mesa State Mavericks baseball team continued its hot streak today at Suplizio Field, sweeping a doubleheader from the visiting Metro State Roadrunners by scores of 2-1 and 13-5. The Mavericks are now on a five game win streak and will have a chance to go for its first series sweep of the weekend.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Maverick Nolan Snell (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Roadrunner Bradshaw Perry were locked in a pitchers dual. Snell and the Mavericks ended up with the upper hand and the 2-1 win. Snell allowed one run on three hits, walked one and struck out twelve in the complete game effort.

Offensively, Ian McKnight (Durango, Colo.) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Jeff Popick (Lakewood, Colo.) finished 1-for-1 with a run scored and two hit by pitches.

In the nightcap, the Roadrunners jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after their half of the first inning but the Mavericks answered back with seven runs on four hits in the first inning and never looked back in the 13-5 win.

Tim Moore (Denver, Colo.) picked up the win and Ben Sawyer (Grand Junction, Colo.) picked up the save pitching three effective innings in relief.

Jeff Popick and Ian McKnight paced the Mavericks offensively again. Popick finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs while McKnight went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

The two teams will finish their four game series on Sunday with a single nine inning game starting at 12:00pm at Suplizio Field.
