Mavericks Drop Roadrunners 10-9

                The Mesa State Mavericks got the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) season off on the right foot with a 10-9 win in 11 innings. In the win, the Mavericks staved off defeat on three separate occasions.

 

                Metro State led the game 8-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Mesa State was down to its final out in the inning when Ken Evanson (Pittsburg, Calif.) hit a double into the right center field gap. Junior Ian McKnight (Durango, Colo.) followed Evanson's double with one of his own in nearly the exact same spot, deep in the right center field gap. McKnight's double scored Evanson and the Roadrunner lead was cut to 8-7. Greg Anderson (Tempe, Ariz.) followed McKnight with an RBI single scoring McKnight from second and knotted the game at 8-8 and the team headed to extra innings.

 

                In the tenth inning, Metro State scored a single run in the top half of the inning. In the Maverick's half of the inning, they would even the score once again. Ken Evanson drew a 3-2, 2 out, bases loaded walk to knot the game at 9-9.

 

                The Roadrunners were held scoreless in the top half of the eleventh inning. Mesa State would once again be down to its final out in the inning. Ryan Shelton (Woodinville, Wash.) drew a walk followed by an Erik Nordine (Grand Junction, Colo.) walk. Senior Peter Arakawa (Aiea, Hawaii) would follow them with a walk which brought Brian Bello (Ft. Collins, Colo.) to the plate. Bello would strike out but advanced to first base on a wild pitch and scored Ryan Shelton from third.

 

                Greg Anderson finished the game 4-for-6 with a double and two RBI's. Jeff Popick (Lakewood, Colo.) hit his first homerun of the season, a three run shot to right center field.

 

                Taylor Hamilton (Grand Junction, Colo.) picked up the win in relief. Hamilton is now 1-0 on the season.

 

                Maverick starter Dylan Evans (Farmington, N.M.) went 6.1 innings and allowed six runs on five hits, walked two, and struck out seven.

 

                The Mavericks are now 1-0 in RMAC play and 3-4 on the season. The Roadrunners fell to 3-2 and 0-1 in RMAC games.

 

                The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday (March 5) starting at 1:00pm at Suplizio Field.
