Mavs drop post-season contest to Adams 77-57

Mesa State fell to Adams State Tuesday night 77-57 in the first round of the RMAC Shootout Tournament.

 

The Mavericks jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a 3-pointerand a lay-up by Sharaya Selsor to start the game. The next 12 minutes the Mavs failed to score a point as the Grizzlies took a 14-5 lead with 6:40 remaining in the first half. MSC outscored ASC 18-12 the remainder of the first period and trailed by just three points (23-26) at intermission.

 

MSC pulled to within two points (30-32) on a jumper by Kelsey Sigl at the 16:26 mark. Over the next seven minutes the Grizzlies exploded on a 21-3 run and a 20 point lead (53-33) with 9:49 remaining in regulation. ASC maintained the double-digit lead as they registered 51-second half points.

 

Tara Gehring led the way with 14 points off the bench for the Mavs. Sharaya Selsor finished with 13 points. Katrina Selsor and Katie Brady  have four assists each.

 

ASC out-rebounded the Mavs 43-26. The Grizzlies posted 22 of their 51 second half points off turnovers and second chance put-backs.

 

Mesa State shot 33 percent (18-54) from the floor and hit 14 of 19 free throws. Adams State shot 44 percent (24-54) from the field and connected on 24 of 27 free throws. MSC hit seven treys to the Grizzlies five.

 

Vera Jo Bustos led all players with 22 points and five assists. ASC had four players in double digits.

 

NCAA Division II post season tournament bids will be announced Sunday night.

The men's and women's selection announcements can be viewed via webcast on NCAA.com. The women's show begins at 7:30 p.m. followed by the men's at 8 p.m.
