Mavericks Win Series FInale 8-2

                The Mesa State won their third consecutive series with an 8-2 victory over the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves Sunday afternoon at Suplizio Field. With the win, The Mavericks are now 9-5 on the season and 7-1 in the RMAC.

 

                The Mavericks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Jeff Popick (Lakewood, Colo.) delivered a two-run double to left center field in the bottom of the first inning.

 

                Mesa State tacked on to its lead in the fourth inning when Brian Bello (Ft. Collins, Colo.) stroked  a two-run homerun to left field. It was Bello's first homerun of the season. The Maverick lead was now 4-0.

 

                CSU-Pueblo cut the lead to 4-2 in the top half of the fifth inning.

 

                The Mavericks exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning. In the inning, Mesa State scored on a bases loaded wild pitch, a bases loaded walk and a two-run Erik Nordine (Grand Junction, Colo.) single.

 

                Starter Jared Christensen (Alpine, Utah) earned the win pitching 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits, walked one, and struck out seven.

 

                Bello, Nordine, and Popick all finished with two hits in the win.

 

                Mesa State will be on the road next weekend when they take on the Colorado Mines Orediggers. First pitch on Friday March 18th is slated for 6:00pm at Darden Field on the campus of Colorado Mines.
