The Mesa State Mavericks and CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves split a twinbill Saaturday evening at Suplizio Field. CSU-Pueblo took game one by a score of 4-1 and the Mavericks took the nightcap 7-3. Mesa State's record improved to 8-5 overall and 6-1 in the RMAC.
In game one, CSU-Pueblo scored a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to win 4-1. The Mavericks could only muster one run on two hits.
Nolan Snell (Albuquerque, N.M.) got the nod and pitched 6.0 innings and allowed four runs on three hits, walked six and struck out eight. Snell's record fell to 2-2 on the season.
In the nightcap, the Mavericks scored seven runs in the first three innings and cruised to a 7-3 victory.
Zach Barger (Grand Junction, Colo.) and Ken Evanson (Pittsburg, Calif.) each had two hits in the win. Austin Kaiser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) got his first collegiate hit in the third inning, a two Run single up the middle.
Ben Sawyer (Grand Junction, Colo.) picked up the win in relief of starter Kyle Davis (Highlands Ranch, Colo.). Sawyer pitched 3.0 innings and allowed one run on three hits, walked none, and three strikeouts.
The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow at 12:00pm at Suplizio Field.
