Mavericks Take Two from Red Storm

                The Mesa State Mavericks picked up there first wins of the 2011 season with a doubleheader sweep of Dixie State. Mesa State won by scores of 9-5 and 4-0 today in St. George, Utah. The Mavericks improved their record to 2-4.

 

                In the opener, the Mavericks and Red Storm were knotted at 3-3 heading into the top half of the sixth inning. Mesa State erupted for six runs on four hits paired with two Red Storm errors gave the Mavericks a 9-3 lead.

 

                Dixie State answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning but that was all they could muster.

 

                Dylan Evans (Farmington, N.M.) pitched 5. 1 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out two for his first win of the season. Jared Christensen (Alpine, Utah) picked up the save, pitching the final 3.2 innings allowing a lone hit in the eighth inning.

 

                Jeff Popick (Lakewood, Colo.) and Erik Nordine (Grand Junction, Colo.) provided the spark offensively. Popick finished the game 4-for-5 with double and an RBI while Nordine went 3-for-5 with two RBIs.

 

                In the nightcap, the Mavericks scored lone runs in the first, third, sixth and the seventh on their way to the 4-0 shutout.

 

                Nolan Snell (Albuquerque, N.M.), Derek Benham (Seattle, Wash.), and Taylor Hamilton (Grand Junction, Colo.) combined on the shutout. Snell finished his start going 5.0 innings and allowed no runs on two hits, walked five and struck out four on his way to his first win as a Maverick.

 

                Chase Moore (Ogden, Utah) finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and a monster homerun to left center field. Ken Evanson (Pittsburg, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

 

                The Mavericks and Red Storm will conclude their four game series tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:00pm, weather pending. Check back on the schedule portion for the latest start times
