Mavs Drop Final Three in San Diego

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3           The Mesa State Mavericks dropped the final three games of the four game series with 2nd ranked UC-San Diego in La Jolla, Calif. The Mavericks drop to 0-4 on the season. The Tritons of UCSD improved to 7-1 and are now ranked #1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper rankings (Feb. 14).

          In game one Saturday, the Mavericks and Tritons played eleven innings before the final got settled with UCSD winning 3-2. Senior Ken Evanson (Pittsburg, Calif.) and Juniors Jeff Popick (Lakewood, Colo.) and Dustin Fackrell (Taylorsville, Utah) led the Mavericks attack with two hits apeice.

          The Mavericks got a strong pitching performance out of starter Dylan Evans (Farmington, N.M.) Evans went 7 innings allowing two runs on four hits, walked no one, and struck out four. Senior Taylor Hamilton (Grand Junction, Colo.) took the loss in relief.

         In the nightcap, Maverick Nolan Snell (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Triton Starter Daniel Simmons locked horns in a pitchers dual. Simmons ended up getting the upper hand winning 3-0. Snell ended up going 4.2 innings allowing three runs on three hits, walked six, and struck out eight.

          The Mavericks could only muster two hits against Simmons.

          In the series finale, UCSD jumped out to a 7-1 lead after seven innings, but the Mavericks came storming back with two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth before falling 7-6. Mesa State had the tying run on third and the go-ahead runner on first when the game ended.

          Greg Anderson (Tempe, Ariz.) provided the offensive spark, finishing the day 4-for-5 with two RBI's. Jeff Popick also chipped in with two RBI's.

          Freshman Tyler Ehlers (Aurora, Colo) came in relief of Josh Ogden (Aurora, Colo.) and pitched well in his collegiate debut. Ehlers pitched 5.0 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits, walked two, and struck out one.

          The Mavericks will take on the Dixie State Red Storm on Friday and Saturday at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George, Utah. Both days will be doubleheaders starting at 1:00pm.
