Box Score The Mesa State Baseball team opened its season last night in La Jolla, Calif. The Mavs had a tough task ahead of them as they took on #2 UC-San Diego at Triton Ballpark. The Tritons pounded out 13 hits on their way to a 6-1 victory. Mesa State is now 3-7 in its last ten season openers.
Triton All-American TIm Shibuya limited the Mavericks to five hits and struck out eight. Maverick starter Tim Moore (Denver, Colo.) lasted 4.1 innings allowing four runs on ten hits while striking out two. The start was Moore's first as a Maverick.
UC-San Diego took advantage early in the first inning. The Tritons got a leadoff single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Triton Danny Susdorf singled him in and scored later in the inning on a Kyle Saul sacrifice fly. They added one more run in the inning on a double steal. UC-San Diego led 3-0 after the first inning.
The Tritons added a single run in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning.
The Mavericks got on the board in the top half of the ninth inning. Pinch hitter Ian McKnight (Durango, Colo.) reached on a fielders choice which scored Brian Bello (Ft. Collins, Colo.) That was all the Mavericks could muster.
Maverick Senior Greg Anderson (Tempe, Ariz.) finished the game 3-for-3.
Mesa State and UC-San Diego both stranded ten runners on base and while the two combined for 23 hits, only one was for extra bases.
The Mavericks and Tritons will be back in action today at 1:00pm (MST) in a doubleheader at Triton Ballpark.
