With much of the student body gone for Thanksgiving, the Mavericks opened up their home schedule as they hosted the Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Classic at Brownson Arena. After a hot start to the game, the ladies were able to hold off Tarleton State for their first win of the season, 67-54.

“The two games in California definitely gave us a spark to finally win,” Hillary Duncan said. “We were just ready to come out and get that win.”

The Mavericks were able to jump out to a 9-2 lead to start the game. The first six baskets of the game were scored by six different players. The big start led Tarleton to use three time outs in the first nine minutes of action. The Mavs got another big burst of energy five minutes later when Kelsey Sigl blocked a shot that led to a Katrina Selsor fast break jumper to put the Mavs up double digits.

Selsor led all first half scorers with nine points, as Duncan was able to add on seven points of her own in the half. Sigl and Selsor each grabbed four rebounds as the Mavs out-rebounded Tarleton State 24-16. The ladies shot 48 percent in the half.

The Mavs were able to make it a 21-point lead just four minutes into the second half, going up 42-21. Tarleton State then went on a run to cut the lead down to 11 points, led by Shelby Adamson. The Mavs were able to hold up, however, and end the run, going back up 17 points with under six minutes to go. The Maverick defense kept a comfortable lead throughout, winning the game

Selsor ended up with 15 points to lead all scorers with Sigl close behind with 14 points. Each had seven rebounds. Duncan chipped in with 11 points and a couple rebounds. Despite fouling out, Effo Baker had five assists and two rebounds.

“I was just shooting the ball without thinking about it,” Selsor said. “I felt a lot more comfortable out there. The fact that we got a lot of support from the community tonight was also a big boost for all of us.”

The Mavs will finish the Classic tomorrow night as they play Oklahoma Panhandle at 5:00 p.m. at Brownson Arena.
