Colorado Mesa fell 3-0 to No. 16 Regis University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at Dirks Field in Durango, Colo. The loss ends the Mavericks season (10-8-4) and the Regis Rangers (15-5-0) advance to the second round, Sunday vs. Fort Lewis College.
Regis jumped out to a quick start, controlling the tempo and pressuring the Mavs' defense. Regis' Marissa Davis scored at the 11:08 mark in the game for her seventh goal of the season. Davis took a slide pass from CC Rinehart who tapped it in for an early 1-0 lead. Regis doubled the lead 1:35 later on a goal by Taylor White to take a 2-0 advantage. White scored on a deflected cross pass off Heidi Chandler's hip to score her second goal on the year.
CMU tallied five shots in the first half and four corner kicks while the Rangers registered nine first-half shots and four corner kicks.
The Mavericks came out in the second half and gained back some momentum with eight shots including six on goal. Regis was out-shot in the second half 8-6 but was able to cushion the lead at 68:31 mark on a Lauren Dorsey-Spitz goal. The Rangers maneuvered the ball from Meghan Stuart to Chandler who passed the ball wide to Dorsey-Spitz for the third goal of the contest for the Rangers.
CMU's Sara Islas led the way with three shots, all on goal, in 90 minutes of action. Leilani Wiernicki finished with three shots, one on goal. Kelci Crispe and Daniela Salinas each tallied two shots.
Sarah Schnetzler had five saves in the game for the Mavericks.
Regis will play host Fort Lewis College Sunday at 11:30 am, at Dirks Field in Durango.
