Colorado Mesa University (2-4, 1-3) defeated Fort Lewis College (1-5, 0-4) 22-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon in Durango, Colo.
The Mavericks notched their first league victory racking up 512 total yards of offense, including 356 yards on the ground. Will Halboth and Jake Cimolino each rushed for over 130 yards and combined for 52 of the 70 total carries. Halboth had 28 carries for 138 yards and a two-yard touchdown run. Cimolino finished with 133 yards on 24 carries.
Caleb Pavy was a perfect 5-for-5 in field goals (39, 30, 36, 25, and 35) and one Point after Touchdown accounting for 16 of the Mavs' 22 points.
Mavs quarterback Steve Romero started the game and completed 18-of-28 for 156 yards. He rushed six times for 40 yard. Romero is back from a shoulder injury that kept him on the sidelines the previous two games.
Zach Adair and Austin Rodriguez combined for 11 receptions and 107 yards.
CMU defense allowed the Skyhawks just 57 rushing yards on 23 attempts. The Skyhawks threw for 242 yards as quarterback Tim Jenkins was sacked four times by the Mavs defense.
Jake Edmiston and Chad Benkelman led the team with 7 tackles each. Edmiston registered 5 solo tackles, one pass break-up and one quarterback hurry. Benkelman had four solo and one tackle for loss yardage.
Domonique Lewis had two sacks on the day for a loss of 13 yards and tallied 3.5 tackles for loss yardage (17) on the day.
CMU's defense shutout FLC in the first half, taking 13-0 lead in to the half. Pavy scored on a 39-yard FG in the first quarter. Will Halboth's two-yard run in the second half pushed the lead to 10-0 and Pavy's 30-yard FG with 44 seconds left gave the Mavs the 13-0 intermission lead.
FLC's only points came in the third quarter taking advantage of a CMU interception. The Skyhawks drove 21 yards to CMU's 9-yard line before settling on a 26-yard field goal.
CMU scored the final nine points in the game; a Pavy 36-yard field goal in the third quarter (3:59). Pavy tacked on a 25 and 35-yard field goals in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
CMU will return home Saturday, October 15 to host Colorado School of Mines. Kick-off is set for 1:00 PM at Stocker Stadium.
