Colorado Mesa volleyball team defeated Westminster College in non-conference action Tuesday night in Salt Lake City. The Mavericks won 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 27-25) to improve to 6-11 overall. The loss dropped the Griffins to 7-10 on the year.
CMU won set one taking advantage of a 6-2 run to pull ahead 12-8 on the way to a 25-23 set one score. Westminster never regained a lead but tied the set at 23-23 before a kill by Rachael Beaty and a block by Kelly Regimbal and Antoinette McCormick sealed set one.
Westminster bounced back to take set two 25-20. After nine ties and several lead changes the Griffins were able to string several runs to close out the set.
In set three, CMU's run of six consecutive points, including back-to-back service aces by Megan Rush, extended the lead to 19-10. WC pulled to within four points (20-24) but a kill by Rebecca Sellers closed out the set for a 2-1 lead.
After an early CMU lead in set 4, the Griffins went up 15-14 lead and extended it to 21-19 following Ashley Marchant's seventh kill of the set. Trailing 20-22 the Mavs went on a 4-0 run for a 24-23 lead. Three consecutive points by WC gave the Griffins a set point. A service error by WC tied the game at 25-25 and CMU closed out the set and victory on a kill by McCormick and service ace by Rush.
Rush finished the game with four service aces and 17 digs. McCormick led the team with 12 kills (.310 attack percentage) and three blocks. Regimbal finished with 10 kills and seven digs.
