When the girls laced up for Friday's game against Colorado Christian, they had already clinched the final postseason spot the night before when UC-Colorado Springs lost. With Metro State losing just hours before, the Mavs had the chance to clinch a home game for the first round of the RMAC tournament. On Senior Night at Walker Field, the Mavs were able to hold off the Cougars, 1-0.
“I've had a great career here,” Sara Islas said. “I'm just glad I could end it with an awesome season.”
The Mavs had control throughout the first half, as they outshot the Cougars 9-3, with seven of their shots being on goal. The Mavericks got on the board first with a rocket from Daniela Salinas. That goal was her team-leading fourth of the season. Sara Isalas, Sam Burneo and Kelci Crispe each took two shots. Arielle Harris saved the only shot that came her way.
The second half was highlighted by good defense by the Mavs. They kept the Cougars from getting good looks at the net. The end of the game was pressured by the Cougars, as four of the team's five shots on goal were in the final 10 minutes. The defense held strong, however, and the Mavs won, 1-0.
The Mavs had only one shot on goal in the second half while taking four total shots.
“After the first goal, we definitely wanted to score more,” coach Erin Sharpe said. “But, we played strong as a unit and were able to hole on. All year we play for our seniors, and I am glad that we could win for them tonight.”
With the win, the Mavs improved to 7-6-4 on the season. They also move one step closer to hosting the first round of the RMAC playoffs. If the Mavs win Sunday against UC-Colorado Springs, they will host a game Wednesday at Walker Field to open the tournament.
