Box Score Mesa State (10-3, 6-3) held off CSU-Pueblo (5-7, 2-6) Friday night in RMAC action 71-67 at Massari Arena on the campus of CSU-Pueblo.
Colton Burgon and Lance Fite combined for 39 points; 27 points coming in the second half from the duo. Burgon tallied 16 of his team high 20 points in the second half. Fite was 8 of 11 from the field (2-3 treys) and had eight rebounds. Colton pulled down nine rebounds and finished 8 of 14 from the floor.
Chandler Burgon led the team with 10 rebounds as the Mavericks out-rebounded CSU-P 42-27.
Kalonji Paschal handed out six assists and finished with nine points.
MSC led by one point at half (31-30) and built a 10 point lead mid-way through the second half on back-to-back treys by Fite and Russell Gregory to push the lead to eight. A layup by Jeff Hart gave the Mavs a 50-40 lead with 10:02 left in regulation. MSC's largest lead was 12 points following a jumper by Colton Burgon at the 8:08 mark.
The Mavericks held a 10 point advantage as late as 2:04 left in the game when the T-Wolves went on a 6-0 run to pull to within 61-64 with a 1:37 left. MSC hit 7 of 9 free throws down the stretch holding off the T-Wolves comeback bid. CSU-P trailed by two (65-67) with 23 seconds left when Blake Francom hit the final four free throws and seal the win. Francom finished with eight points and 4 for 4 from the foul line.
MSC will travel to UC-Colorado Springs Saturday night for a match-up with the Mountain Lions.
