Box Score Mesa State (12-6, 8-6) held off the Regis Rangers (5-13, 2-10) 68-61 in RMAC action Friday night at Regis Fieldhouse.
Michael Bear scored a team high 16 points, 11 in the first half, as the Mavericks withstood a late surge by the Rangers. Bear was 5 for 6 from the field and from the free throw line in 23 minutes off the bench.
MSC led 33-26 at intermission and opened the second half on a 7-2 run to push the lead to 12 points (40-28). Regis trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half and again made a push in the second. The Rangers went on a 16-2 run to pull to within two points (44-46) with 8:44 remaining in regulation. That was as close as the Rangers would come as the Mavericks held off the comeback attempt hitting 9 of 11 free throws in the final five minutes of play.
Colton Burgon finished with 12 points, three rebounds and two assists.
Lance Fite was perfect from the field (3-3) including 2 for 2 from beyond the arc for 11 points.
Chandler Burgon was 3 for 3 from the field finishing with eight points.
Regis' Lance Korell led all players with a game high 17 points.
MSC shot 52.5 percent (21-40) from the field and connected on 24 of 32 free throws. MSC held a 36-22 rebound margin and finished with five blocks.
Mesa State will play at league-leading Metro State Saturday at 7 p.m.
