The Mesa State Women's Soccer team picked up its first RMAC win of the season in grand fashion tonight. The Mavericks overwhelmed the Grizzlies of Adams State by taking 29 shots to Adams' 4. The Mavericks improved to 3-4-1 on the season and 1-3-0 in RMAC play while Adams State fell to 3-5-0 and 2-2-0 in the RMAC.
Mesa State got on the board in the middle of the first half. In the 20th minute, Redshirt Junior
Sara Islas (Tucson, Ariz.) was fouled inside the box and was awarded a penalty kick. Islas found the right side of the net for her first goal as a Maverick.
The half would end with Mesa State leading, 1-0.
The Mavericks would tack on another goal in the 54th minute. Sophomore
Kaselyn Butters (Grand Junction, Colo.) kicked in a goal on the right side. Butters took a corner kick from Sophomore
Kelci Crispe (Lakewood, Colo.) and received her first goal of the season to give Mesa State a 2-0 edge.
Mesa State would get another goal a little less than two minutes later. Freshman
Leilani Wiernicki(Stockton, Calif.) headed in another
Kelci Crispe corner kick. The goal was Lelani's first of her Maverick career and gave the Mavericks a 3-0 lead.
Senior
Alicia Kahler (Spokane, Wash.) and Junior
Arielle Harris (Glendale, Ariz.) combined on the shutout. Kahler was credited with the win and her record improved to 2-3-1.
The Mavericks will be back in action Sunday at Noon at Walker Field. Mesa State will take on the UCCS Mountain Lions in the 'Breast Cancer Awareness' game. Proceeds from the game will benefit the 'Swing for Life' Foundation.
