Mavericks Walk-Off with Series Split

          The Mesa State Mavericks closed out the home season with a series split of the Dixie State Red Storm. Mesa State won games two and four while the Red Storm won games one and three. With the split, the Mavericks sit at 29-16 overall and #4 in the latest NCAA Central Region Rankings.

          In Game One, Dixie State Red Storm starter Troy Hunter scattered nine hits and allowed only two runs and picked up the victory 16-2. Maverick starter Scott Bachman went only two innings and allowed nine runs.

          Joe Schmidtbauer was the only Maverick player with two hits. Schmidtbauer came in as a defensive replacement for Ken Evanson.

          In the nightcap, Maverick righty Mike Sutton got his second start of the season and made it worth while. Sutton pitched four innings allowed only two hits and struck out four to pick up his first victory of the season, 5-3. Jack Amidei came in the seventh and allowed a solo home run but picked up his eighth save of the season.

          Junior Greg Anderson went 2-for-2 with his fourth homerun of the season and Chase Moore hit his seventh homerun of the season to lead the Maverick offense.

          In yesterday's morning tilt, the Red Storm scored four runs in the first and coasted to the 7-2 victory after that. Starter Derek Riley took the loss, lasting only a third of an inning.

          Greg Anderson and Jeff Popick each had two hits in the loss.

          In the series finale, Mesa State trailed by eight runs heading into the Mesa State half of the 6th inning. Mesa State tallied four runs in the 6th and scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the game 12-11.

          Erik Nordine had the game winning, walk-off two-run single to end it.

          Reliever Tim Moore picked up the win in relief to put his record at 2-0.

          Mesa State will head to Lakewood this weekend to take on the Colorado Christian Cougars in the final RMAC series of the season. Mesa State will then head to Kearney, Nebraska next week for the RMAC Tournament which starts on Wednesday, May 5th.
