Mavericks Split with Cowboys

            The Mesa State Mavericks played the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys over the weekend and earned a split. The Mavericks now sit at 6-8 on the season and 2-4 in RMAC play.

            In Game One, Highlands righty Drew Vassil kept the Mavericks in check for all nine innings. Vassil allowed seven hits and three runs on his way to an 8-3 victory for the Cowboys.

            Maverick lefty Scott Bachman was tagged for his first loss of the season. Bachman went six innings allowing nine hits and three walks.

            Game Two of the weekend saw a different Maverick team. Mesa State pounded out 26 hits en route to a 21-4 thumping of the Cowboys. Offensively, Mesa was led by Junior Art Flores who finished 4-for-5 with a double and four RBI's.

            Kyle Davis earned his second win of the season. Davis now sits at 2-0 on the season.

            In the night cap of the doubleheader, Highlands came out and put four runs on the board in the first inning and never looked back in a 18-4 win over the Mavericks. Mesa State could only muster five hits in the game.

            Senior Chris Shea couldn't get out of the first inning and took the loss. Shea is now 1-2 on the year.

            In Sunday's Non-RMAC game, Sophomore Dylan Evans came out and pitched 7.1 innings of eight hit ball to lead the Mesa State to a 12-8 victory. Evans improved his record to 2-1 on the season.

            The Mavericks were led offensively by Junior Brett Nigbur and Sophomore Joe Schmidtbauer who each had three hits in the game.

            The Mavericks will be at home this weekend and will square off against the Colorado Christian Cougars. Fridays game is scheduled for 6:00m.
