Box Score Hannah Breidel scored seven of her 14 points in the final 4:22 of regulation Saturday night to help the Mavericks upset the Adams State Grizzlies 53-49 in Brownson Arena. Adams State entered the game on a four game win streak and ranked third in the latest NCAA DII Central Regional rankings.
MSC took a two point lead (49-47) with 1:39 left on back-to-back treys by Breidel and Courtney McCaig. MSC sealed the win from the free throw line hitting four free throws down the stretch. Breidel's final two free throws with eight seconds remaining gave the Mavs their fourth win in five games.
MSC held a 24-22 halftime lead holding the Grizzlies to 8 of 25 from the floor. ASC took a one point lead at 13:34 in the second half, yet held no more than a four point lead until the final 1:39 when McCaig's trey gave the Mavs a 49-47 lead. MSC's four consecutive free throws lifted the team to its eighth victory overall and fifth conference win.
Breidel and Katie Cupp each finished with 14 points. The two combined for seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
McCaig posted nine points, three rebound and four blocked shots.
Jenn Kimbrow hit 6 of 8 from the field for her 12 points. Alaina Brennan grabbed a game high seven rebounds.
MSC will travel to Gunnison Tuesday night for a matchup with Western State. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
