Mavs Open with Two Losses

The Mesa State Mavericks started off the season with a pair of losses to the Dixie State Red Storm. The Mavericks lost the first game 7-2 and 11-10 in the nightcap.

In Game One, Mesa State got on the board early with a sacrifice fly from Junior Art Flores to make the score 1-0. Dixie would take the lead as they scored four runs in the next two innings to put the Red Storm up 4-1.

Sophomore Chase Moore would cut into the lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning but that would be all the Mavericks could muster as they would go onto lose 7-2.

Senior Chris Shea would take the loss allowing three earned runs in three innings of work.

Game Two would put the Sophomore Garrett Carpenter on the mound for the Mavericks and the offense gave him a 5-1 heading into the third inning. Carpenter would get two quick outs before walking the bases loaded and surrendering a grand slam to the next batter. Carpenter would finish the game with eight strikeouts in five innings.

The Mavericks would pound out 13 hits in the game but that wasnt enough as the Red Storm would benefit from 9 free passes to pick up the doubleheader sweep 11-10.

The final two games have been cancelled due to heavy rain/snow in the St. George area.

The Mavericks will travel to Pueblo to take on CSU-Pueblo in non-conference action next weekend. The Mavericks first home action will be Friday February 19th as they are set to take on the Mary Marauders at Suplizio Field.
