Mesa men crowned RMAC champion

Beat CSU-P 80-71

MSC (21-4, 15-3) defeated CSU-Pueblo (15-10, 10-8) 80-71 Friday night clinching the RMAC 2010 regular season championship title. The win snaps a three game losing streak.

A Maverick win and a loss by Colorado School Mines at Neb.-Kearney Friday night sealed the league title. It is the first conference title since 1999.

Lance Fite led the Mavs scoring with 17 points, hitting 7 of 8 from the floor.

Four players registered double digit figures including Mike Dominguez's 14 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Jase Herl returned to action after missing three games with an ankle injury. Herl recorded 13 points, a game high nine rebounds and four assists.

Justin Ashbaugh had 12 points, seven rebounds and two assists.

MSC led 39-27 at halftime and stretched the lead to 20 points (59-39) with 10:28 remaining in regulation. CSU-P went on an 18-6 run to narrow the lead to eight points (65-57) with 2:43 left in the game.

The Mavericks stepped to the foul line in the final 2:30 and hit 15 of 20 free throws to close out the game.

MSC shot 52 percent (21-40) from the floor and 30 of 42 from the foul line.

CSU-P shot 46 percent (25-54) in the game and hit 14 of 23 from the free throw line.

The Mavericks close out the regular season against New Mexico Highlands Saturday night at 7 p.m.

MSC will host CSU-P on Tuesday night in the first round of the RMAC Shootout Tournament at 7 p.m. at Brownson Arena.
