Mesa State volleyball team clinched its second consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference west division title and third under six-year Head Coach Dave Fleming with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-19) sweep at Adams State College Friday night.
MSC (19-8 overall, 13-5 RMAC) tallied 11 team blocks led by Lindsey Reed's (Jefferson) season high six blocks.
Freshman Sarah Kemp led all players with 11 kills and added four blocks, including two solo for a team high 14 points. Kemp was coming off a season high 20 kills at Fort Lewis College on Thursday night. Kemp tallied 31 kills in the two matches with an impressive .338 attack percentage.
Meagan Bosch recorded eight kills and just one hitting error, finishing with a .467 kill percentage. She added 11 digs and three blocks.
Senior setter Tara King had 32 assists on the night, two service aces, kills and blocks in the three-set match. Libero Whitney Howard finished with a game high 13 digs.
MSC never trailed in the first set hitting .235 in set one with 13 kills, five errors in 34 attempts. In the second and third sets the Mavs and Grizzlies traded leads twice in each set but the Mavs prevailed with a 7-0 run in set two. The third set the ASC rallied to take an 11-10 lead before the Mavs outscored the Grizzlies 13-2 closing out the three-set sweep.
The Mavericks will enter next week's RMAC Tournament in Kearney, NE. as the No. 2 seed. The Lopers will host the tournament as the No. 1 seed. The RMAC tournament bracket will be released Sunday as regular season action wraps-up Saturday night.
