Mavs Ground Skyhawks 31-14

Hamm Rushes for 162 yards

Mesa State football (2-3, 2-2) scored 28 un-answered fourth quarter points in a 31-14 Homecoming victory over Fort Lewis College (1-4, 1-3) Saturday night at Stocker Stadium.

Trailing 7-0 at halftime MSC scored on a Caleb Pavy 37-yard field goal midway through the third quarter. FLC extended the lead to 14-3 on a 59-yard touchdown pass with 2:03 remaining in the third.

MSC opened the fourth quarter on a 20-yard touchdown run by James Hamm. Hamm had a career night, rushing for 162 yards on 32 carries and two touchdowns. Hamm averaged 5.1 yards per carry.

Following the 60-yard seven play drive to pull to within 14-10 the Mavs defense held forcing the Skyhawks to punt deep in their own territory. Trevor deBraga blocked the punt and Tanner Ridgway scooped up the ball and returned it 15-yards for the Mavs first lead of the night, 17-14.

MSC stopped the Skyhawks on their next possession forcing a punt after Tony Kelly and Nainoa Campbell registered one of five sacks on the evening.

MSC's next drive started at their own 38-yard line; driving the ball to the FLC 19, on third and six Fort Lewis was flagged with a pass interference call, spotting the ball at the FLC 4-yard line. Hamm scored two plays later on a 2-yard run and a 24-14 lead with 6:06 remaining in regulation.

Fort Lewis' next possession failed to yield a first down and going for it on fourth down was forced to hurry a pass with pressure from Campbell. resulting in an incomplete pass, turning the ball over on downs at their own 24-yard line.

MSC took advantage of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to start the series on the FLC 12. After a loss of two yards Michael Mankoff found Zach Belloni in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown reception with 3:12 left in the game. MSC's 31-14 lead stood as the Skyhawks failed on their next two possessions; one resulting in a fumble recovery by Jonathon Wilson-Wheeler and a Tanner Whaley interception with seconds remaining.

Hamm led all players with 162 rushing yards. Michael Mankoff finished the night 11-of-28 for 104 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Tyler Loomis had four receptions for 43 yards.

Defensively Whaley had two interceptions, recovered a fumble, two tackles and one pass breakup. Spencer McAdoo had a team high eight tackles. MSC had five sacks on the night led by Domonique Lewis' two. Kelly recorded 1.5 sacks.

Pavy was 1-for-3 in field goal attempts. Pavy missed from 37-yards and 43 before hitting a 37-yarder for the Mavs first points of the game.

Michael Brady punted for times for 152 yards, landing two inside the 20-yard line.

MSC had it most productive rushing attack this year totaling 238 yards on the ground. MSC was 4-for-5 in red zone scoring and converted on 8-of-16 third downs. MSC had a season high five sacks in the game and was flagged just five times for 43 yards.

FLC yielded just 43 rushing yards and passed for 270. The Skyhawks had four turnovers and were flagged 12 times for 122 yards.

MSC will travel to Golden next Saturday for a matchup with the 5-1 Orediggers. CSM is undefeated in RMAC play boasting a 4-0 record, tied at the top with Nebraska-Kearney. Kick-off is set for Noon.
