The Women's Soccer team started the RMAC season out in fashion defeating Adams State, 5-0. It was the RMAC opener for both teams on Friday night at Walker Field.
The first half, neither team could get anything going offensively as the score remained 0-0 after the first 45 minutes. The ball remained on the Mesa State half of the field for most of the half, the Mavericks even took 9 shots, 5 of which were on goal.
Just as the second half started, Mesa State found itself in a corner kick situation which was taken by Junior
Natali Koen (Rio Rancho, NM). Koen booted the ball that bent around the near post and found the net. It was Koen's second goal of the season.
Three minutes later, Mesa State scored their second goal of the game. Junior
Kelly Husky (Littleton, CO) chipped a ball from way outside the box that found the back of the net. It was an unassisted goal for Husky's first goal of the season.
The scoring didn't stop there, Maverick
Kira Brannan (Broomfield, CO) found the back of the net for her second goal of the season. The senior took the shot from the far side of the field that found the right side of the goal in the 66th minute. That goal gave the Mavericks a 3-0 advantage.
Next it was
Kelci Crispe's (Lakewood, CO) turn. The freshman scored her first collegiate goal in the 73rd minute. Crispe shot the ball high in the air and the Grizzly goalie thought it was going to be over the goal but the ball found its way into the net. Mesa State took a 4-0 lead.
The final goal was scored by Central High School product
Kaselyn Butters. Butters found the net in the 88th minute for her first collegiate goal. The redshirt freshman took her shot from just outside the box and found the right side of the goal.
Goalkeeper's
Alicia Kahler (Spokane, WA) and
Kaitlan Bennett (Federal Way, WA) combined for the Mavericks second shutout of the season. The win improved Mesa State 's record to 4-1-0, 1-0-0. Adams State falls to 2-3-0, 0-1-0.
The Mavericks will be on the road this Sunday as they take on the UCCS Mountain Lions in Colorado Springs. They will return home next weekend to take on the Orediggers of Colorado School of Mines on Friday night at 4:00pm.
