Mesa State advanced in the winners bracket of the 2009 NCAA Central Region tournament with a win of RMAC foe New Mexico Highlands, 15-13. The teams combined for 28 runs and 42 hits in an offensive sided game.
The lone bright pitching spot for the Mavericks was freshman left hander
Garrett Carpenter. Carpenter went four and two-thirds innings and allowed seven hits. He quieted the Cowboys bats in the middle innings of the game. Carpenter picked up his first win of the season and his career.
Craig Lanzarotta provided the spark for the Maverick offense. Lanzarotta was 5-for-6 with three RBI's including his 12th and 13th doubles of the season.
Senior
Matt Bodenchuk finished the game with three hits including his 25th and 26th doubles of the season. Bodenchuck also had two RBI's to bump his season total to 85, 4 shy of the school record for RBI's in a season.
In earlier action today, CSU-Pueblo knocked off NSIC tournament champion Minnesota State by the score of 13-4. CSU-Pueblo advances to play the loser of tonight's game between Wayne State and SW Minnesota State.
The Mavericks will play the winner of tonight's game between 3rd seeded Wayne State and 5th seeded SW Minnesota State at 12:30pm tomorrow at Suplizio Field.
