The Mesa State Mavericks nailed down their fifth consecutive RMAC Championship with a split down in Las Vegas, NM. By winning the RMAC, the Mavericks are guaranteed the #1 seed in next weeks RMAC Tournament in Pueblo, CO. Here is a recap of each game against the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys.
Down to their last strike and down 7-6,
Justin Little reached on an error by the Cowboy shortstop to bring to the plate
Kevin Becker. Becker singled through the right side that sent Little to third bringing up
Mike Provencher. During Provencher's at-bat, Becker stole second to put the go ahead run at second base. Provencher then singled sharply through the right side of the infield to score both Little and Becker.
The Mavericks went on to score four runs that inning and winning 10-7.
Aaron Guinn pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the save. Guinn currently leads the RMAC in saves with seven.
In game two, the Mavericks weren't as fortunate as Cowboy starter Gorman Romero stuffed the Mavericks for seven innings to pick up the win for the Cowboys 10-4. Romero pitched the complete game allowing nine hits and three walks while striking out seven.
The only Maverick with multiple hits was 1B
Marty Rover. Rover finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Senior left hander
Chris Carma took the loss to drop his record to 7-3.
In the nightcap of the double header,
Craig Lanzarotta's two homers were enough to clinch the game and the RMAC Title, 8-5. Both of Lanzarotta's homeruns cleared the fence in right field. Craig finished the game 3-for-3 with six RBI's.
Senior righty
Jason Fronczak picked up the win as he went five innings allowing eight hits and one walk while striking out four. Fronczak is now 8-0.
Reliever
Chris Shea pitched the final two innings to pick up his first save of the season. Shea didn't allow a hit in his two innings.
In the final game of the series, the Mavericks were down 11-7 heading into the eighth inning and scored three runs to cut the Cowboy lead to one but could not mount anything more as they lost 11-10. The Mav's left ten runners on base and six of those were in scoring position.
Mike Provencher finished the game 4-for-4 with three RBI's and his 14th double of the season.
Matt Bodenchuk went 2-for-4 with six RBI's. Bodenchuk hit his 21st double of the season along with his 13th homerun.
Kevin Becker finished the game 3-for-5 with his 12th and 13th doubles of the season.
The RMAC Champs will be back in action this week against the Colorado Christian Cougars. Friday's doubleheader will be Little League Family Night / Record Attendance Game. The current NCAA attendance record is held by CSU-Pueblo with 3,683.
