Saturday night the Mavericks hosted the Adams State, looking to improve on their 14-10 (12-5 RMAC) record, and back up the emotional victory over Fort Lewis College Friday night.
The Grizzlies took an early lead, racing out to an 8-1 lead at the 13:16 mark. Brian Kenshalo's 3-pointer started the Mavs on a 10-0 run and an 11-8 lead. MSC never trailed again in the first half although the Grizzlies tied the game on three different occasions, including a 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining to tie the game at 24 at the break.
The second half opened with the lead changing hands several times until the Mavericks went on a 14-2 run. MSC held a double digit lead the remainder of the game, outscoring ASC 45-32 in the second half.
Ryan Mathews finished with a game high 21 points, hitting 5-of-7 from the 3-point line. Jake Swartzendruber added 14 points and a game high eight rebounds. Kenshalo finished with nine points (3-treys) and Jase Herl registered nine points, five rebounds and four assists.
MSC will close out the regular season next weekend at New Mexico Highlands and at CSU-Pueblo. MSC is tied for second place in the west division, one game behind New Mexico Highlands. The top eight teams qualify for the RMAC post season tournament, with the top four teams hosting a first round tournament game on Tuesday, March 3. The winners of the four Tuesday night match-ups will advance to the RMAC Shootout in Pueblo, CO., on March 6-7.
