Mike Dominguez scores 22 in Double OT Win at Mines

Mavs Undefeated, Beat Mines in Double OT

MSC 6-0, 2-0

Mesa State (6-0, 2-0) remains undefeated winning 88-84 in double overtime at Colorado School of Mines (4-2, 1-1) Saturday night in Golden.

 

Sean Flohr's 3-pointer with 1:58 remaining in regulation tied the game at 67 to force the first overtime. Each team managed just four points each in the first overtime with six of the eight points coming off free throws. Jase Herl's two free throws with 56 seconds left in the first overtime tied the game at 71 and sent the game in to the second overtime.

 

The two teams exploded for 30 total points in the final five minutes with the Mavs out scoring the Orediggers 17-13 for an 88-84 victory. Michael Bear scored six of his 12 points in the second overtime including two free throws with 23 seconds remaining. Mike Dominguez sealed the win with two free throws with two seconds left. Dominguez was 4 for 4 from the foul line in the final OT. Herl's trey at the 2:58 mark gave the Mavs a one point advantage (76-75) and a lead they would not relinquish. Ryan Mortensen scored four of his final nine points in the final overtime. Mortensen added a rebound and a steal (scored a lay-up) in the final five minutes.

 

Dominguez led the team with 22 points (season high), six rebounds and four assists. Dominguez was 5 of 7 from the floor, all treys, and hit 7 of 9 free throws. Herl and Flohr each finished with 13 points. Herl had five rebounds and a team high five assists. Bear had 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Aaron Markham finished with 10 points, two assists and one steal.

 

MSC shot 46.6 percent (27-58) from the field and 51.9 percent (14-7) from beyond the arc. CSM shot 39.7 percent (29-73) from the floor and out rebounded MSC 49-31. The Orediggers finished with six blocked shots.

 

MSC will host Regis University Saturday night at 9 p.m. Sunday night the Mavs will host Metro State for a re-match with the Roadrunners at 7 p.m. MSC beat Metro two weeks ago in a non-conference game in the Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Classic.
