Mesa men (8-0, 4-0) topped national ranked #15-Metro State 80-77 in a league match-up Sunday night in Brownson Arena. The Mavericks defeated the No. 12 ranked Roadrunners two weeks ago (Nov. 28) in a non-conference game in the Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Classic 61-56.
Mike Dominguez sank four free throws in the final 47 seconds to seal the victory and extend the Mavs win streak to eight.
Metro took a 40-38 halftime lead on a shot by Brian Minor at the buzzer. Neither team led by more than six points in the first half. MSC shot 70 percent (14-20) in the first half including 8 of 12 from the 3-point line.
The lead changed hands five times in the second half and was tied on three different occasions late in the game. Tied at 76-76 Metro took a 77-76 lead on a free throw by A.J. Flournoy. Dominguez gave the Mavs a 78-77 lead on two made free throws with 19 seconds remaining in regulation. Following a Metro turnover and a foul with six seconds left, Dominguez stepped to the line and hit his final two free throws for an 80-77 win.
Dominguez finished with a game high 21 points and eight assists.
Jase Herl posted 10 points, a game high eight assists and eight rebounds. Herl was 4 for 5 from the field.
Brian Kenshalo was 5 for 7 from the 3-point line for his season high 15 points. Lance Fite finished with 12 points and four rebounds. Sean Flohr added 10 points and two rebounds off the bench.
MSC outscored Metro 26-13 off the bench with Kenshalo and Flohr combining for 25 of the 26 points.
MSC made a season high 12 treys (12-23) and shot 60.5 percent (26-43) from the field.
The Mavericks will travel to Quincy, IL for the Quincy University Classic on December 19-20. MSC opens the tournament against Central State Saturday at 2 p.m.
MSC will play at the University Illinois-Springfield on Monday before breaking for the holidays.
