Mavericks Go 1-1 on Parents Weekend

        Mesa State Women's Soccer team finished Parents' Weekend with 1-1 record. Mesa State defeated N.M. Highlands 1-0 on Friday before losing yesterday to Regis 4-3. Mesa State's record is now 7-5-0 overall and 4-4-0 in RMAC play, good for 5th in the conference.

        In Friday's match, the Cowgirls and Mavericks had an even battle for three quarters of the match with neither team taking a distinct advantage. In the 72nd minute, things changed. Sr. Kira Brannan (Broomfield, CO) crossed a pass in front of the goal and Jr. Daniela Ramirez (Rupert, ID) headed it in on the right side of the goal. The goal was Ramirez' 3rd of the season and gave Mesa State the lead.

        In the 88th minute, Mesa State survived a scare when goalkeeper Alicia Kahler (Spokane, WA) came out to stop a scoring effort from the Cowgirls and the ball deflected off of Kahler to another Cowgirl. Cowgirl Mari Jorstad took a shot which Kira Brannan came in to make the save to help preserve the shutout. 

        In yesterday's match, Mesa State jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the 6th minute as Daniela Ramirez scored on a pass from Jr. Rachelle Ormond (Peoria, AZ). Ramirez' 4th goal of the season found the right side of the net.

        Regis evened the score in the 21st minute when Marissa Davis headed in a pass Heather Thomas. It was Davis' 8th goal of the season.

        Shortly after halftime, Mesa State would reclaim the lead. Sr. Jami Simpson (Broomfield, CO) scored her 1st goal of the season in the 46th mnute. Simpson took a pass from Fr. Brittany Cito (Littleton, CO) and found the left side of the net to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead.

        The lead would only last seven minutes though as Regis' Chelsea Bokan scored her 5th goal of the season. Bokan received a pass Jordan Miller and found the right side of the goal. Bokan's goal tied the score at two goals a peice.

        Regis would take its first lead of the game in the 62nd minute on a goal from Heather Thomas. Thomas' 4th goal of the season gave the Rangers a 3-2 lead.

        The Rangers lead would last all of 24 seconds, as the Mavericks evened the score at 3-3 on Daniela Ramirez' 2nd goal of the game. Fr. Kelci Crispe (Lakewood, CO) chipped a pass into the box and Ramirez finished it off with a header. It was Ramirez' 5th goal of the season.

        Regis would take the lead for good when they received a penalty kick for a foul in the box. Ranger Maddie Reeves converted th PK for her 2nd goal of the season and gave the Rangers the decisive edge 4-3.

        Mesa State will be back in action this Friday at Walker Field as they take on the Roadrunners of Metro State at 7pm.
