Junior Esmeralda Martinez-Ramos took second place and helped lead the Mavericks to a second place finish at the UC-Colorado Springs Rust-Buster Invitational. The 4k run was held at Monument Valley Park North in Colorado Springs.
Martinez-Ramos finished the race in a time of 15:22, just under a minute behind first place finisher, Shannon Payne (UCCS). MSC had three runners place in the top 10.
Host UCCS won the event placing four in the top ten and finished with 27 points. MSC and Colorado Mines finished tied for second with 51 points. Colorado College was fourth (105 points) and CSU-Pueblo was fifth (146 points). Colorado Mines' second team placed sixth. Colorado Christian raced individually. The field consisted of 47 runners.
In her first collegiate race freshman Brooke Bosman (Broomfield, CO) placed sixth overall in a time of 15:47. Sophomore Paula Bruzewski (Gilcrest, CO) finished eighth in a time of 16:02. Freshman Alison Poppe (Fort Collins, CO) was 17th (16:55) followed by teammate Andrea Ager's 18th place finish in a time of 16:57. Ager is a sophomore from Denver, CO. Freshman Alexis Skarda (Boulder, CO) finished 21st (17:11) in her first race as a Maverick.
MSC will return to competition September 20 at the Pre-RMAC race to be held in Grand Junction.
