Friday night in Brownson Arena, Mesa State College took on Colorado Mines trying to earn their fourth consecutive victory. But Mines wasn't about to go easy on the Mavs just because of the holiday season. After five minutes of action, the Mavs trailed the Orediggers 11-2.
The Mavs stepped up their game in the next five minutes out scoring Mines 13-5 to pull to within 15-16 at the 10 minute mark. At 5:03 MSC tied the game at 27 and closed out the first half on a 14-4 run and a 41-31 halftime lead.
The second half the Orediggers climbed back to tie the game as each team took turns holding a one point lead. Mines took a five point lead with 2:08 remaining in regulation before the Mavs went on a 8-0 run including two clutch free throws from Jase Herl for a 70-69 lead with five seconds on the clock Andre Carter's lay-up at time expired gave the Mavs a 72-69 victory.
Ryan Mathews and Kurt Bangle put up fourteen and thirteen points for the Mavs, respectively. Jase Herl finished with 11 points and 8 rebounds.
MSC (4-2, 1-0) will host Colorado Christian (4-3, 0-1) Sunday at Noon. CCU opened up RMAC play at Western State, falling to the Mountaineers.
