2008 Mines Tip-off Classic

Mesa State Mavericks took on the Caldwell Cougars in the 2008 Mines Tip-off Classic hosted by Colorado School of Mines in Golden on Saturday night.

The Cougars had the upper hand early jumping out to a 14-4 lead. Following a few quick substitutions and less then five minutes later, the game was all tied at 16. The two teams battled back and forth before the Mavericks went on an 20-1 run to take a 43-23 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the first half.

The Mavericks managed to ride this momentum like an avalanche into the second period. They just keep on increasing their lead and the Cougars couldn't seem to find a way to stop them. By the time the game ended, Mesa had racked up 83 points and Caldwell, 52.

Sean Flohr was at the top of his game leading all scorers with 17 points, including 5-of-7 from the 3-point line. Four of the Mavs other players; Kurt Bangle, Ryan Mathews, Jase Herl, and Jake Swartzendruber; all scored ten points adding to the impressive total. Herl pulled down a team high 7 rebounds and handed out 4 assists.

MSC will host the Holiday Inn Thanksgiving Classic this Friday and Saturday at Brownson Arena. The Mavericks will play Colorado College on Friday and Johnson & Wales on Saturday. Both games are set to tip-off at 8 p.m.
