Soccer Nets Two Victories in Hawaii

Team goes 2-1

                 Mesa State went 2-1 on their recent trip to Hawaii posting wins over Hawaii Pacific (2-0) and BYU-Hawaii (1-0). The Mavericks lost the first game of the three game swing in the tropics to Hawaii Hilo, 3-1. MSC is 7-3 overall and will return to RMAC play this weekend at New Mexico Highlands and Regis University.
                Four different Mavericks scored over the weekend in the team's two shutout victories and one loss. Hawaii Hilo jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead and increased the lead to 3-0 early in the second period. Two of the three goals came on breakaway shots. MSC's Deb Vigil (Sr., 5'7, Orem, UT) found the back of the net (55:53) for the Mavericks lone goal.
                Sunday versus Hawaii Pacific MSC scored a goal in each period for the 2-0 shutout. Sherilyn Stoffel (Jr., 5'4, Grand Junction, CO) scored (13:52) on an assist from Kira Brannan (Jr., 5'5, Broomfield, CO) on a shot over the keepers head for a 1-0 lead. Late in the game (85:39) Daniela Ramirez (F, 5'3, Rupert, ID) put the game away with an unassisted goal. Goalkeeper Kaitlan Bennett (Jr., 5'8, Federal Way, WA) was credited with the victory. MSC outshot Hawaii Pacific 20-3.
                In the game against Hawaii Pacific, Kira Brannan broke a 0-0 tie in the second period (82:05) with a shot from 10-yards out to preserve a 1-0 shutout victory.  MSC tallied five shots in the game and one shot on goal, the winning goal. Hawaii Pacific had 12 shots on the day, two on goal. Goalkeeper Julie Rasmussen (Fr., 5'0, Rio Rancho, NM) played all 90 minutes in the net and recorded two saves.
                 MSC is 2-2-0 in RMAC action.
