Travis Floeck



Travis Floeck, appointed as Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at Colorado Mesa University in July 2024, enters his second year with the Mavericks after 14 impactful years at the NCAA Division I level with the University of Idaho and Oregon State University and 20 years of coaching overall.

Colorado Mesa University (2024–Present):
  • Floeck’s leadership reshaped the coaching staff by promoting internal talent (Tim Reetz, Jay Shuman) and bringing in new expertise including jumps coach Hannah Meek and distance assistant coach Greta Van Calcar. The revamped staff prioritizes high character and a focus on academics in line with the athletic goals for the program. Floeck specifically coaches the distance and middle distance student-athletes in the program.
  • Achieved a historic milestone in his first year, the women's cross country team qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in a decade, finishing 23rd at the Division II national meet.
  • Brooke Miller broke the school record in the women’s 800m indoors with a time of 2:12.30.
  • Jackson Baker broke the school record in the men’s 5000m indoors in a 15:08.26.
  • Both the men’s and women’s teams broke the school record in the distance medley relay at the same indoor meet with the men’s team of Kevin Degree, Dylan Campbell, Kyle Towne, and Chase Brown running to a time of 10:11.53 and a women’s team of Megan Hodges, Lexie Williams, Jordan Staniszewski, and Autumn McQuitty running to a time of 12:09.89.
  • His middle distance and distance event runner established 45 new top ten marks in CMU history during his first year.
  • The men’s track & field team won the RMAC Brechler Award for achieving the highest GPA in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 3.54 team GPA.
University of Idaho, 2014–2024:
  • As Head Distance Coach and Assistant Track & Field Coach, he coached three NCAA Division I All-Americans, 17 NCAA Championship qualifiers and 64 top 10 program performances.
  • Athletes who made the final rounds of the NCAA Championships under Floeck’s guidance include:
    • Alycia Butterworth who earned All-American honors in the 3,000m steeplechase (she would go on later to become an Olympian for Canada and compete in the 2020 games in Tokyo in the steeplechase).
    • Kinsey Gomez placed tenth at the NCAA Championships in the 10,000m earning all-America honors in a school record time of 33:18.
    • Lorenz Herrmann placed tenth in the 800m at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and ran a school record and Big Sky Conference record time of 1:46.90.
  • Gomez was a Big Sky Conference Champion in the 5000m indoors, Herrmann won three Big Sky titles in the 800m, and Maya Kobylanski and Katja Pattis each won a 3000m Steeplechase conference title while being coached by Floeck.
  • Herrmann set school records in the indoor 800m (1:47.39), outdoor 800 (1:46.90), indoor mile (4:03.17), and 1500m (3:41.93). Gomez set a school record in the 10,000m in 33:18. Kelsey Swenson set the school record in the 5000m indoors in 16:21.44. The men’s distance medley relay team with Herrmann, Tim Stevens, Zac Bright, and Spencer Barrera set a school record in 9:48.41 all during Floeck’s tenure with the Vandals.
  • The cross country teams consistently performed in the Big Sky Conference under Floeck’s guidance. The women’s team twice finished second at the conference championships in 2019 and 2023, behind highly ranked teams from Northern Arizona University. Kara Story was named Big Sky Freshman of the Year in 2016 and Katja Pattis was honored with the same title in 2022. Kelsey Swenson was named as the Big Sky Freshman of the Year for indoor track & field in 2020.
  • The men’s and women’s cross country teams consistently had teams in the top ten in the country in the grade point average. The men’s cross country team had the number one GPA in the entire country in 2023 with a 3.89 and the women’s team had the number one GPA in the country with a 3.88 in 2021.
Oregon State (2010–2014):
  • Instrumental in transitioning OSU from a distance-only track program to a full-fledged one, assisted in coaching three-time All-American Laura Carlyle, who smashed five school records and competed in three NCAA Championships, and Hayley Oveson, who placed fifth in the 5000m at the Pac 10 meet in 2010.
Lane Community College (2007–2009):
  • As Head Cross Country and Assistant Track & Field Coach, he led both teams to Southern Region titles while coaching 18 junior college All-Americans, two USATF junior national qualifiers, and an NWAACC champion in the 1,500m. He was named Southern Region Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2008.
Southern Oregon University (2006):
  • As an Assistant Coach, helped guide Trevor Palmer to a NAIA national runner-up in the 1,500m.
Professional Coaching:
  • Professional successes includes coaching Kinsey Middleton (formerly Gomez) to two IAAF World Championship appearances (2018 in the Half Marathon in Valencia and 2022 in the Marathon in Eugene) and an IAAF Gold Label Marathon victory.
  • Has coached professional trail athlete Samantha Lewis to trail national titles, World Mountain Running Championship representation, and placings in international world level events like UTMB.
  • Has coached several athletes who have qualified and competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials for the marathon.
Early Roles & Professional Experience:
  • Gained experience working in Nike’s running department directly after college and as one of the original staffers at RunnerSpace.com.
  • Built foundations at the grassroots level, coaching middle school and high school athletes in the Siuslaw School District—including helping coach a state champion in the 1,500m.
  • Since 2014, has served as an Assistant Camp Director at the Steens Mountain Running Camp.
Athletic Background & Education:
  • As a student-athlete at Southern Oregon University, he was a two-time national qualifier in the 800m, contributed to four conference championship teams, and ran on squads that placed in top positions at the NAIA national championships.
  • Crowned the 2000 Oregon 3A State Champion in the 800m and set his high school record in the event.
  • Holds a B.S. in Communication from Southern Oregon University and has earned a USATF Level One (and in distance, Level Two) coaching certification.
