Former Canadian National Team and Florida State University All-American Chelsea Whalen is in her first season as the Mavericks’ assistant track and field coach in charge of the Maverick’ throwers.

Whalen comes to CMU in 2020 after serving in a similar role for the 2018-19 seasons at Southern Arkansas University. While with the Muleriders, Whalen’s athletes broke four school and two Great American Conference records.
Previously, Whalen had served as a graduate assistant coach at her alma-mater in Tallahassee. She was part of the Seminoles’ staff that won three of four possible Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) titles in 2018 (Men’s Indoor & Outdoor, Women’s Indoor).

While competing for the Seminoles from 2010-14, Whalen earned three Second Team USTFCCA Division I All-America honors, including two in the javelin and one in the shot put. She also held the school-record in the outdoor shot put until it was broken by Gleneve Grange, one of her pupils during her time on the Seminole coaching staff.

She also claimed ACC shot put title in 2013 and went on to captain the Seminoles, who won the triple crown of ACC titles (Cross Country, Indoor, Outdoor) as a senior in 2013-2014. Whalen was also a 3-time All-ACC performer and a 7-time Academic All-ACC selection and earned numerous USTFCCCA All-Academic and CoSIDA Academic All-District accolades.

A native of Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Whalen also had the opportunity to represent Team Canada at numerous international competitions such as the World University Games and Francophone Games in 2013 after competing at the IAAF World Junior Championships, hosted in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada in 2010 and the World Youth Championships in 2009 in Brixen, Italy.

Whalen earned both her bachelor’s (2014) and master’s (2018) degrees at Florida State in sport management and also holds several significant certifications by the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association, including T&FA Track & Field Technical Certification and TF&A Program Management Certification.

Outside of track and field, she is a New York Jets fan.

Her parents Jeff and Kelly Whalen still reside in Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
