Veteran diving coach Liam Acosta has returned to his alma mater to serve as the Mavs’ assistant diving coach in 2022-23.
Acosta, a 2021 history graduate of CMU and former Maverick diver served as the head diving coach at Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival Western Colorado University last year. In his year in Gunnison, Acosta coached Mountaineer diver Sarah Mortenson to the NCAA Division II Championship Pre-Qualification meet. Mortenson also re-wrote the Mountaineer diving record book setting new program-marks for both the six and 11-dive formats on both the 1 and 3-meter boards.
Previously, Acosta had assisted the Maverick divers and long-time CMU diving coach Logan Pearsall after wrapping up his personal collegiate career. As a student assistant coach in 2019-20, Acosta helped five different Maverick divers earn a combined ten CSCAA All-America honors. Included in that list were RMAC Divers of the Year Ammar Hassan and Brittany Dixon, who swept the RMAC titles.
Acosta began his personal athletic career at CMU in 2010-11 earning Third Team All-RMAC honors. After stops at Palomar College and Division I Cal State-Bakersfield, Acosta began coaching at Dive San Diego from 2013-18. In that time with the club, he guided 12 AAU National Qualifiers and three USA National Championship qualifiers.
He then returned to CMU to cap his personal career, taking seventh at the 2019 RMAC Championships on both boards as a senior.
Outside of coaching, Acosta enjoys playing disc golf and snowboarding.
His parents Susan and David Acosta, who still reside in Oceanside, California, are very supportive of he and his brother A.J., a 3-time Olympic Trials qualifier in the 1,500 meters for the University of Oregon Ducks track & field team.
