Micah Guthland

Micah Guthland joined the Mavericks in the fall of 2021 as the Mavericks’ assistant track and field coach, responsible for the throwers.

From 2019-21, Guthland was in a similar role at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. While there, he guided all-American Veronica Montane, who was USTFCCCA All-Mideast Region Female Javelin Thrower and third-place finisher at the NCAA Division III Championships in 2021. He also coached Julia Zambo, who set the Blue Jays’ women’s hammer and weight throw school records while and won the 2021 Centennial Conference title in the hammer.

His athletes also combined to earn four all-conference honors.

Prior to his time at JHU, Guthland coached throwers for six years at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. During his time with the Scots, his athletes broke school records in men’s and women’s hammer as well as the women’s weight throw. They also earned a pair of USTFCCCA All-Central Region honors in the javelin and gained multiple top-ten all-time performance marks in all indoor and outdoor throwing events.

He also served as a strength and conditioning coach while at Macalester. Guthland earned his undergraduate degree at the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul in 2006 and was a member of the Tommies’ track & field team.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in business law and marketing, Guthland went to the University of Minnesota for his coaching certificate and master of education in applied kinesiology and sports Management degree.

Guthland also has multiple certifications through USA Track & Field, the USTFCCCA and US Weightlifting, including: USATF Level 2:Throws, USTFCCCA Strength and Conditioning Specialist, USTFCCCA Sprints Hurdles and Relays Events Specialist, and US Weightlifting Level 1.

He grew up in Minnesota and enjoys weightlifting, being in the outdoors, hiking, going to concerts and slow pitch softball.
