Matt Canterbury begins his fifth season as the head cross country and assistant track and field coach. Prior to his head coaching duties Matt was the Assistant Women’s Cross Country/Track coach and Assistant Director of Admissions.
Canterbury led both the men's and women's cross country teams to their first appearance at the NCAA Championships in 2014. He has had several student-athletes qualify for the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships, including Shane Niksic and John Cusick who both earned All-American honors in the 1,500.
Prior to his coaching duties at Colorado Mesa University, Matt was the head men’s and women’s cross country/track coach at Sterling College and Briar Cliff University. His athletes tallied over 20 school records, 10 national qualifiers and two All-Americans.
Matt competed in both cross country and track at Augustana College (Sioux Falls, SD) and Chico State University (Chico, CA).
While at Chico State, Matt graduated with a bachelors degree in kinesiology and a masters degree in sports administration.
Matt and his wife Tess have two sons, Rye and Wynn, and a daughter, Charlie.
