Yasin Gulgan has served as the assistant coach for throws at Colorado Mesa University since 2013. The Maverick throwers have excelled under Gulgan setting numerous school records and personal bests.Â
Trevor Jensen won the RMAC title in the hammer throw and finished third in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Four men earned All-RMAC honors in the javelin, including conference champion Greggory Payseno. Overall CMU had 10 throwers earn All-RMAC accolades at the outdoor championships.Â
Trevor Jensen won the RMAC title in the weight throw in 2017 with a school-record throw of 17.98 meters that was good enough for 36th in the nation. He would also finish seventh in the shot put with a school-record throw of 15.65.Â
The Mavericks had two other men place in the weight throw at the RMACÂ indoor championships, Chris Walker sixth (17.03) and Eric Nimtz seventh (16.32).Â
Hannah McClure finished fifth (12.60) in the shot put at the RMAC Championships, and Danielle Pickert threw 12.10. . Â
2016 was a break-out year for the Mavericks in the discus. Aaron Simons threw over 48 meters to break the school record and Chris Walker and Trevor Jensen each surpassed 45 meters.Â
Deziree Lipsett placed sixth (42.35) at the RMAC Championships, and Taylor Clark was eighth (42.10). Â
Dani Menchow finished third (37.68) in the javelin at the 2015 RMAC Championships.Â
Alex Armenta threw a school-record 53.10 in the javelin, and Spencer Jahr also eclipsed the 53-meter mark.Â
In 2015, Keanan Garnes threw a then school-record 16.75 school-record to finish fifth in the shot put at the RMAC Championships.Â
Prior to joining the Mavericks, Gulgan worked as a personal trainer with the United States Air Force in Incirlik, Turkey.Â
Gulgan started his track and field coaching career back in his home country of Turkey where he worked with youth athletes for five years.Â
Gulgan was an accomplished athlete competing in both wrestling and track and field. He was the Turkish Winter Discus Champion and represented Turkey at several international competitions.Â
He received his bachelors degree with honors in physical education and athletic training from Gazi University (Turkey) in 2011. He is also a certified personal trainer and massage therapist. He earned his USA Weightlifting certification in 2016.
Gulgan and his wife Elizabeth have three children. Gulgan enjoys hunting, fishing and reading.Â
