Alex Garza joined the Colorado Mesa women’s soccer program in 2015, serving as the second assistant coach and working closely with the goalkeepers.
Following his time CMU he served as the Head Girls’ Soccer Coach at Fruita Monument for four seasons. During his time, he led the team to a 37-21-1 overall record.
Spanning from 2016-2018 the team posted a 32-12 record, with a 23-2 league record, marking the highest winning percentage from a single coach in the Southwestern League (SWL) history. The team earned 10 or more wins in those seasons, helping secure their spot in the 5A state playoffs. The Wildcats won the SWL League Title in 2016 and then again in 2018. In 2018, they were the first SWL program, boys or girls, to finish with an undefeated league schedule ultimately leading to their highest seed in the 5A State playoffs at No. 4 out of 32 teams.
Throughout those years he coached 18 First-Team All-League selections, and three All-State selections. He was named SWL Coach of the Year in 2017 and 2018.
After his stint with the Wildcats, he switched gears and transitioned back into the college game taking over as the second assistant and goalkeeper’s coach for the Colorado Mesa men’s soccer program in 2018. That season he helped coach the team to a 13-4-5 record and were the runner up in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament. The team went on the make it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA National Tournament.
He coached Briley Guarneri to RMAC Goalkeeper of the Year and United Soccer Coaches First Team South Central All-Region. He also helped coach three All-Americans in James McGhee (CB), Kevin Del Mazo (MDF), and Lawan Abary (FWD).
In 2019, he dedicated time to both the men’s and women’s program as the assistant and goalkeeper’s coach. The men finished with a 10-5-3 overall record, and the women finished 8-7-2.
He worked closely with goalkeeper Brendan Brown, helping him achieve a 0.54 GAA, and an 86.6 save percentage. Brown also achieved RMAC Goalkeeper of the Year, United Soccer Coaches Third Team All-South Central Region, COSIDA 1st Team Academic All-American, D2CAA First Team All-Region and finished in the top-5 in all major NCAA Division II goalkeeping categories.
