AKUMAL, Mexico— The Colorado Mesa University men's golf team had three players finish in the top ten of the individual standings but slipped back into a tie for second place in the final team standings of the Shootout at PGA Riviera Maya, which wrapped up Tuesday morning here at the Tulum Country Club.
 
Up by five shots after the opening round on Sunday and by two shots after 36 holes and Monday's play, the Mavericks were locked in a battle with UT Permian Basin and UT Tyler throughout the final round while playing alongside the Falcons and Patriots.
 
UTPB posted a team score of 299 (+11) in the final round to win by two shots with a total of 888 (+24).  The Mavs, who had a final round score of 303 (+26), their highest of nine rounds this season, finished at 890 (+26), alongside UT Tyler, which posted a 297 after recording the best team score (290) of any of the ten squads in the field on Monday.
 
Sophomore Henry Starr recorded a 3-over par 75 in Tuesday's round and finished in third place overall at 219 (+3).  French teammates Will Alexander and Baptiste Laborde finished in a tie for sixth at 224 (+8).  Alexander had a 75 on Tuesday while Laborde finished with a 79.
 
Freshman Colby Hutton ended up in a tie for 11th at 226 (+10) after recorded a team-best 74 in Tuesday's round.
 
Senior Dylan Everett slid to 42^nd with a final round of 81 and a 54-hole total of 236 (+20).
 
UTPB's Dian Wilmot and Tyler's Blake Harwell shared the individual win at 213 (-6) as the only two players to finish under par on the difficult 6,980-yard, par-72 course that the 50-man field as a whole played in nearly five shots above par (76.71).
 
Taking second in their last two tournaments, the Mavs will have a brief respite before resuming their season at the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational, hosted by West Texas A&M on Oct. 12-13 in Amarillo.
