MONTROSE, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University men's golf team posted a pair of under par rounds and has three players in the top ten of the individual standings while standing in third place as a team after 36 holes of the San Juan Intercollegiate presented by Timberline Bank following Monday's play here at The Bridges Golf & Country Club.
The Mavs posted team scores of 282 (-2) and 275 (-9) and are sandwiched in between Western New Mexico (556, -12) and the Colorado School of Mines (558, -10). Colorado Christian had the best score in each of Monday's two rounds and leads by 15 shots at 541 (-27).
The Mavericks' "B" Team also fared well and is in a tie for ninth place out of 13 teams at 571 (+3), even with nationally-ranked West Texas A&M and a shot ahead of Fort Lewis' "A" squad.
Maverick sophomore
Henry Starr, the Mavs' leader in last week's Travis Roy Memorial Invitational in Sheridan, Wyoming, continued his strong start to the season and posted an 8-under par score of 134 (-8) in his two laps around the 7,017-yard, par-71 course. Starr made seven birdies and an eagle en-route to his opening round of 6-under par 65 before making five more birdies in his afternoon 69 (-2). The opening round was the best of his Maverick career by three shots.
The Englewood, Colorado native is in third place in the 75-man field, just two shots behind Colorado Christian's co-leaders Bradley Mulder and Lance Christensen, Jr., both of whom stand at -10.
CMU newcomer
Will Alexander paced the Maverick "B" team with rounds of 67 and 70 and is part of a 4-way tie for fifth place at 137 (-5) while CMU senior
Dylan Everett is in a 3-way tie for ninth at 138 (-4) after, recording scores of 70 and 68, the latter of which led the Mavericks.
The Mavs' primary squad posted under par rounds in the afternoon as freshman
Colby Hutton and senior
Baptiste Laborde both recorded 69's to join Everett and Starr. Hutton is tied for 24
th overall at even par 142 while Laborde is just one shot back in a tie for 31
st at 143 (+1).
Three Mavs on the secondary squad also finished the afternoon par under round. Alexander had five birdies in his afternoon round of 70 while
Jacob Gonzalez made four birdies and an eagle to card a 69. He is in a tie for 31
st at 143 (+1) overall alongside
Cruz Carter, who had steady rounds of 72 and 71.
Junior
Inigo Badial also broke par with a round of 70 in the afternoon, which featured a run of three straight birdies on the first through third holes. He is tied for 56
th overall at 148 (+6).
The tournament will continue on Tuesday with the third and final round, slated for a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
