Mavericks fall on day two of RMAC Tournament

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team fell to the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves 9-8 in 10 innings in the second day of the RMAC Tournament on Thursday (May 7) afternoon at The Diamond at Hamilton Ballpark.

The Mavericks took the lead 2-1 after the first inning behind an RBI double by Cameron Cartwright and an RBI single from Landon Nunes.

CSU Pueblo regained the lead in the fifth after back-to-back home runs to make it 3-2.

Colorado Mesa took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth inning with a Trevor Tse RBI single and a bases loaded walk by Tate Blasi to make it 4-3.

After CSU Pueblo tied it in the top of the seventh inning, Kolby Felix barreled a double to right field to make it 5-4 through seven innings.

Lots of the things happened in the eighth inning of the matchup. With the bases loaded, CSU Pueblo hit an inside-the-park grand slam and were able to take an 8-5 lead in the top half of the inning while Colorado Mesa answered in the bottom half of the inning with a pinch-hit two-run double by Jackson Lapiner. That made the game 8-7 in favor of CSU Pueblo through eight innings.

Maverick Landon Nunes tied it in the ninth with a sac fly to right but CSU Pueblo was able to plate one run in the 10th to take the game.

Colorado Mesa stranded 17 runners on base with 10 left in scoring position.

Tse and Nunes were the lone Mavericks with multi-hit games.

Abe Ahlberg took the tough luck loss pitching the final two innings. He allowed one run on three hits, walked zero and struck out three.

The Mavericks will play an opponent yet to be determined tomorrow morning at 11am. They will play the loser of tonight's game between MSU Denver and UCCS that is scheduled to begin at 9:05pm.
