GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The top-ranked Colorado Mesa baseball team completed the four-game sweep of the UCCS Mountain Lions on Sunday (Apr. 12) afternoon after a 7-3 win in the series finale.
The Mavericks took the lead in the bottom of the first inning after an error by the Mountain Lions shortstop allowed
Kolby Felix to score and make it 1-0.
UCCS tied it up in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout and the score would remain 1-1 until the seventh inning.
Dale would once again be a thorn in the Mavericks side as he hit a home run to left center field giving the Mountain Lions a 2-1 lead heading to the bottom half of the inning.
Colorado Mesa regained the lead in the bottom half as
Noah Neufeld led off the inning with his first home run of the season that also came as a game-tying home run. The round tripper came on the second pitch of the at-bat and he sent it over the wall in left center field.
Later in the inning,
Tate Blasi had an RBI groundout to the shortstop that gave the Mavericks a 3-2 lead after seven innings of play.
The see-saw battle continued in the top half of the eighth as UCCS tied it back up with an RBI double down the left field line.
Jett Walker entered the game on the mound during the top of the eighth. After a walk,
Trevor Tse made an incredible play in the hole at second base, saving a run and getting an out in the process.
Walker then walked Dale before inducing a pop up just off the infield arc to stop the Mountain Lion scoring threat.
The Mavericks used a big bottom of the eighth to regain the lead and extend it.
Noah Neufeld hit his second home run of day and the season followed by a home run from
Kolby Felix for back-to-back home runs to give the Mavericks a 5-3 lead.
They weren't done in the inning. After a
Tate Blasi infield single,
Trevor Tse sent a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left center field for the third home run of the inning. The big fly was Tse's fourth of the season and gave the Mavericks an insurmountable 7-3 lead.
Jett Walker struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win. The redshirt freshman pitched an inning and a third and allowed two walks and struck out three to move his record to 3-1.
Simon Lunsford got the start on the mound and pitched four strong innings. The true freshman allowed one run on two hits, walked one and struck out three but did not factor into the decision.
The Mavericks move their record to 38-3 and remain unbeaten at 24-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
Colorado Mesa will host Regis next week at The Diamond for their final home series of the regular season. The series will begin on Friday at 6:05.
