PUEBLO, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team was unable to close out a win over undefeated Rockhurst University as the Mavs fell 14-13 in overtime on Sunday afternoon here in a neutral field match-up at CSU Pueblo's Art & Lorriane Gonzales Stadium.
The Mavericks held a 13-10 lead in the late stages but gave up three goals in the final two minutes of regulation before the Hawks scored the game-winner 4:05 into the overtime period to claim their fifth win in as many games.
The Mavericks slipped to 1-6 as they wrapped up the non-conference portion of the season on Sunday.
Courteney Havel led the Mavericks' scoring attack with a season-high four goals.
Kaylee Kittle,
Sophie Astone and
Cameron Flynn all chipped in two.
Havel also had three caused turnovers with
Avery Irlbeck (6) and
Carson Dickey (5) combined to win 11 of CMU's 14 draw controls.
Meanwhile,
Sadie Chappuis had three ground balls while
Heather Hawkins made eight saves to help lead the Maverick defense.
The Mavs finished the third quarter with goals by Havel and Flynn less than two minutes apart and had a 10-8 advantage after 45 minutes.
Havel then scored again with 10:48 remaining on a Flynn assist to build an 11-8 lead before the Hawks pulled back within a goal at 11-10 with 8:48 remaining.
Havel and
Courteney Murray then scored man-up goals with 6:48 and 6:05 to go after a 2-minute non-releasable yellow card to build a 13-10 lead.
They were still clinging to a 13-10 lead before the Hawks scored the first of three late goals with 1:56 remaining in regulation after a Maverick turnover.
The Hawks then won the ensuing draw control and converted on a free position shot with 1:11 left to pull within one.
The Mavs then won the draw control but committed another turnover with just a minute remaining as the Hawks scored the equalizer with 44 seconds to go.
Irlbeck then scooped up the draw control as the Mavs had a chance to win but saw a
Carson Dickey shot go wide before being unable to get another shot off in the waning seconds.
In overtime, both teams exchanged turnovers as the Hawks were able to kill off another yellow card.
The Mavs then had three shots to win the game around the 2-minute mark, including a
Sofia Chock shot that went off the past.
The Mavs then took a green card as Kylee Pickens went on to bury a free position shot goal to claim the win.
CMU will return home to Grand Junction to begin conference play against the UCCS Mountain Lions, who are currently 1-2, next Sunday at 11 a.m. The Mountain Lions were due to host Rockhurst on Friday but that game was thwarted by weather. They then fell 13-10 to McKendree on Sunday and will host nationally-power UIndy, currently ranked third in the nation, on Tuesday before starting their RMAC slate on Friday at Westminster.
