OREM, Utah – The No. 4 Colorado Mesa University baseball team dropped a Wednesday mid-week contest to division one opponent Utah Valley University this afternoon by a score of 6-4 at UCCU Ballpark.
The Mavericks led one time in the game before a combined eight runs were managed over the final four innings to eventually give the Wolverines the victory.
This was the Mavs first time facing off with a division one opponent in the regular season since 2016 when they took on Northern Colorado for a two-game series.
The Mavs previously faced off with division one schools Utah University and the Air Force Academy back in the fall for exhibitions as well.
Colorado Mesa sees their 17-game win streak snap with the loss as they move to 18-3 overall on the year. Utah Valley improves to 10-7 with this the first time in program history they've bested the Mavs.
CMU struck first in the game with them taking the lead in the top of the third inning.
Kennedy Hara led off the frame with a double to centerfield before Kolby Felix came around to drive him in on a single off the left field wall.
Colorado Mesa led 1-0 at that point but not before Utah Valley came back to tie it up at one apiece in the fourth.
The Wolverines loaded the bases that inning but only managed the one run from a walk.
The tie lasted just one inning as in sixth the Wolverines then scored again from a solo shot home run.
UVU continued to add to their lead in the seventh putting up a four-spot with them totaling five hits and forcing CMU to make three pitching changes.
Despite the game being 6-1, the Mavs attempted to claw their way back in the eighth and ninth with them scoring three runs.
In the eighth, Hara recorded another leadoff double before Felix was also able to reach base. Ezra Farmer then drove in the pair on double as well to make it a three-run difference.
The Mavs continued to attack in the ninth with Hara driving in another run to make it 6-4, but were struck out two times to end the game.
A total of 43 combined players appeared in today's game with Colorado Mesa utilizing 12 different pitchers.
Jett Walker was credited with the loss moving to 2-1 on the season.
The Mavs outhit the Wolverines 10-6 but were hurt by free passes with there being four walks and four hit by pitches.
Hara led the Mavs with three hits going 3-4 while Ezra Famer added a 2-5 day.
Colorado Mesa will continue their week on the road as they take on CSU Pueblo now for a 4-game conference series. Games are set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday with first pitch on Friday slated for 2 p.m.
