POMONA, Calif. – The No. 9 Colorado Mesa baseball team had a rough fifth inning that wound up costing them the game in a 5-1 loss to the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos in the season opener at Scolinos Field.
In the fifth inning, the Mavericks allowed four runs on four hits, committed two errors and still left one on base. An errant through on two separate ground balls doomed the Mavericks as they allowed five outs in the inning.
Colorado Mesa used six pitchers in the game with starter
Liam Hohenstein being strapped with the loss. Hohenstein allowed one run on one hit, walked three and struck out five in three innings of work.
The Mavericks were only able to muster three hits in the game.
Kennedy Hara,
Landon Nunes, and
Rocco DiFrancesco were all able to collect hits in the game with
Kolby Felix earning the lone RBI for Colorado Mesa.
Felix's RBI came in the eighth inning on a sac fly to center field which brought around
Tate Blasi who was making his Maverick debit.
The loss snaps a string of four straight seasons that the Mavericks had won their season opener which dates to the 2021 season.
The two teams will resume the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 2pm MST from Scolinos Field.
