GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 9 Colorado Mesa baseball team got strong pitching and timely hitting in a 7-1 victory over the Montana State Billings Yellow Jackets on Sunday at Hamilton Ballpark. The win gives the Mavericks their second straight series sweep as they move to 8-0 at home.
Freshman
Jackson Eisenhauer got the start on the bump for the Mavericks and continues to improve every time he makes an appearance. The Los Angeles, Calif. native pitched five shutout innings and allowed just two hits while striking out six. He didn't allow a baserunner to reach third base during his start.
He gave way to his bullpen in the sixth inning, and they were almost as dominant as he was. Four pitchers allowed one run on three hits, one walk and struck out seven in four innings of work.
The Maverick offense gave the pitching staff a cushion early in the game as they plated three runs in the second inning highlighted by RBI singles from
Noah Neufeld and
Keegan Landis.
Trevor Tse jumped on the first pitch he saw in the fifth inning for his second round tripper of the season to make it 4-0 after five innings of play.
A
Kennedy Hara safety squeeze and an
Ezra Farmer two-run double gave the Mavericks some insurance runs in the sixth inning. Hara's bunt scored
Joey Blank from third while Farmer's double brought around
Keegan Landis and Neufeld to make it 7-0 after six innings.
The Yellow Jackets scored one in the seventh inning to stop the shutout.
Brooks Bachman and
Noah Neufeld each finished with three hits.
The Mavericks completed the series sweep over Montana State Billings for the first time since the 2019 season. They also swept the Yellow Jackets in a two-game series in 2021.
The Mavericks will continue their home stand as they will play host to nationally ranked Augustana. The series is scheduled to begin on Thursday at 3pm from The Diamond at Hamilton Ballpark.
